How to Respond to LinkedIn Recruiter Messages
Inbound recruiter messages on LinkedIn are a sign that your profile is working — someone has found you relevant for an opportunity. How you respond determines whether this becomes a productive conversation or a wasted lead.
Reading the Message First
Before responding, read the recruiter message carefully. Note:
- Is this for a specific role or a general networking inquiry?
- Does the role sound relevant to your target?
- Is the recruiter at a recognised firm or is this a generic mass outreach?
- Has the recruiter personalised the message to your background, or is it clearly a template sent to hundreds of people?
Highly personalised messages from specialist recruiters warrant careful responses. Generic mass outreach can be handled more briefly.
Responding When the Role Is Relevant
Respond promptly (within 24-48 hours) and professionally:
"Thank you for reaching out. The [role / opportunity] sounds interesting — I would be happy to have a conversation to learn more. I am currently [available immediately / in a confidential search / open to the right opportunity] and [relevant context about your current situation if appropriate]. Please feel free to send the full job description or schedule a call."
This is direct, professional, and provides the recruiter with what they need to take the next step.
Responding When the Role Is Not Relevant
Respond briefly and leave the door open:
"Thank you for reaching out. The specific role you have described is not quite right for me at this stage — I am focused on [target role type] in [target sector]. But I would be happy to connect and let you know if that changes, or if you have relevant opportunities in the future."
Never ignore recruiter messages entirely. The recruiter who is not right for this search may be right for the next one.
Tracking Recruiter Messages
Add each recruiter conversation to your tracker or networking log. The recruiter's name, firm, what role they approached you about, and the date — so you have context if they reach out again or if you want to proactively follow up with them.
