LinkedIn Privacy Settings for Job Seekers

·CVCircuit Team

LinkedIn's privacy settings are powerful but often poorly understood. Getting them right lets you be visible to recruiters while managing the confidentiality risks of a job search conducted while employed.

The Settings That Matter Most

Profile viewing options: Controls what people see when you view their profile (your name and headline, "LinkedIn Member," or anonymous). For an active job search, your name and headline visible is usually appropriate — it allows networking and shows professional confidence. Anonymous mode prevents people from seeing when you viewed their profile, which is useful if you are researching competitors or specific companies but limits reciprocal networking.

Notify your network of profile changes: When you update your profile significantly, LinkedIn can notify your connections. Disable this during a job search to prevent your current colleagues seeing your CV update.

Sharing profile edits: Similar to above — controls whether your network sees a feed notification about your profile changes. Turn this off during a job search.

Open to Work visibility: As covered in the Open to Work article, this can be set to visible to all members (risky if employed) or recruiters only (significantly safer).

LinkedIn profile URL: You can customise your profile URL to remove the random number string. A clean URL (linkedin.com/in/firstname-lastname) is more professional for email signatures and applications.

Connection visibility: By default, LinkedIn shows some of your connections to others. Restricting this is relevant if competitive intelligence about your network is a concern.

The Search Appearance Settings

LinkedIn has settings that control how and where your profile appears in search results — both within LinkedIn and in external search engines like Google. Enabling your profile to appear in Google search can bring additional visibility, particularly for candidates who publish thought leadership content.

Checking Your Settings

Spend fifteen minutes reviewing your privacy settings before starting an active job search. LinkedIn's settings menu changes periodically — what was in one place may have moved in a recent update.
