How to Track a Job Search When Switching Sectors
Switching sectors — from private to public, from financial services to tech, from healthcare to consulting — adds layers of complexity to a job search. Your tracker needs to reflect the additional research and positioning work involved.
The Additional Complexity of a Sector Switch
A same-sector search allows you to rely on sector knowledge that is already implicit — you understand the language, the key employers, the hiring norms. A sector switch means starting with less information:
- Unfamiliar employer landscape (who are the key players and what are they known for?)
- Different hiring norms (how formal are interviews? What is the typical process length?)
- Different CV vocabulary (the terminology of your target sector may differ significantly from your current one)
- Different network (your current network may have limited reach into your target sector)
Each of these is a research task that belongs in your tracker.
What to Add to Your Tracker for a Sector Switch
Sector research notes: For each target company, add a notes field that captures your understanding of the organisation, the team culture, the role norms, and any sector-specific context. This research investment is significant for a sector switch — the same depth is less necessary in a familiar sector.
Vocabulary translation: Keep a running note (in your tracker or in a separate document) of vocabulary differences between your current sector and your target. "Client management" versus "account management"; "programme delivery" versus "product delivery"; "regulatory affairs" versus "compliance." This prevents vocabulary errors in applications.
Network contacts in the target sector: Track specifically who in your network has connections in the new sector, and what conversations you have had with them. These contacts are your intelligence sources.
Application adaptation notes: Which CV version did you use for each application? What specific translations did you make for this sector? This lets you iterate efficiently.
