How to Run a Better Job Search the Second Time

·CVCircuit Team

If you have been through a job search before, you have data and experience that your first search did not give you. Using it deliberately makes your second search faster and more effective.

What You Know From Your First Search

Which channels worked: Did LinkedIn generate more interviews than Reed? Did direct applications outperform recruiter-led ones? Did referrals produce better quality conversations than cold applications? If you tracked your first search, you have this data. If you did not, reflect on which activities produced the most traction.

What your CV needs: How well did your CV perform in your last search? Did you struggle to get initial responses (suggesting a CV or ATS problem), or did you get responses but struggle to convert them (suggesting the CV was setting expectations you could not meet)?

Your interview patterns: What questions came up repeatedly? Which ones you answered well and which ones you found difficult? If you built a questions bank during your last search, start there.

Your target clarity: Did your first search suffer from being too broad — applying to too many types of roles? Or too narrow — missing relevant opportunities? A clearer target definition this time improves efficiency.

The Documents You Already Have

If you maintained your CV and LinkedIn profile since your last search, updating is faster than rebuilding. If you let them lapse, the first task is the same as for a first-time searcher.

Your network contacts from the last search are warmer than cold connections. People who helped you before, who expressed interest in your candidacy, or who gave you advice are easier to re-engage than new contacts.
