How to Track Salary Discussions During Your Job Search

·CVCircuit Team

Salary discussions happen at unpredictable points in different hiring processes — sometimes at phone screen, sometimes only after an offer is made. Tracking what you have said, what has been discussed, and what has been offered across multiple active processes keeps you consistent and negotiation-ready.

Why Tracking Salary Conversations Matters

Without records, you may:

  • State different salary expectations to different employers — inconsistency that looks poor if it emerges
  • Forget what a specific employer indicated was their range — losing negotiating context
  • Accept an offer without realising another process was likely to generate a better one
  • Make a compensation decision without a complete picture of all active offers

Salary tracking is part of professional job search management, not an afterthought.

What to Record

For each application, track:

  • Your stated expectation: What you told the recruiter or employer when salary was discussed. Note the date.
  • Their stated range: What the employer indicated as the salary band, compensation range, or expectation. Note the date and who told you.
  • Total package context: Is it base salary only? Does it include bonus, pension, equity, benefits? Comparing offers requires comparing total packages.
  • Negotiation status: If an offer has been made, note whether you have accepted, countered, or requested time.

Keeping Your Stated Expectation Consistent

Before your first application in a search, decide on your salary expectation range and stick to it. Inconsistency across employers looks unprofessional and can cause an employer to doubt your judgment.

Your stated expectation should be a range, not a single number. "I am targeting £55,000–£65,000 for the right role" gives you flexibility while being specific enough to be useful.

When Multiple Offers Overlap

This is when tracking salary becomes critical. If two offers arrive within a week:

  • What is the base salary for each?
  • What is the total package?
  • What are the non-monetary differentials?

A side-by-side comparison using your tracked data makes this decision clearer and faster.
