How to Track a Remote Job Search Across Multiple Countries
Fully remote roles can be filled by candidates globally — which means a remote job search is potentially a global search. This expands your opportunity set significantly but adds complexity that requires additional tracking fields.
Additional Fields for an International Remote Search
Company location / headquarters: Even for remote roles, knowing where the employer is headquartered matters for:
- Time zone expectations (a San Francisco company may expect some overlap with Pacific Time)
- Legal entity for your employment contract
- Currency of your compensation
Eligible geographies: Many "remote" roles are remote within a specific country or region. Note each employer's eligibility requirement. Some will employ globally; many will only hire from specific countries for tax and legal reasons.
Time zone compatibility: If the role requires core hours overlap with a specific geography, record this and calculate whether your time zone is compatible.
Currency and FX: If comparing offers in different currencies, add a normalised local currency equivalent to your salary tracking.
Legal and tax status: Remote employment across international borders has complex tax and legal implications. Note for each application whether the employer is offering employment, contractor engagement, or payment via an EOR (Employer of Record) service. These have different implications for your tax position.
Work authorisation: Even for fully remote roles, some employers require specific work authorisation. Note this for each application — particularly important if you are a non-citizen applying to US, EU, or UK employers.
