How to Manage Your Notice Period During a Job Search

·CVCircuit Team

Your notice period — the time between handing in your resignation and your last day at your current employer — is a practical constraint that affects every part of your job search. Managing it well is important at every stage of the process.

Why Notice Period Matters Early in Your Search

Before you start applying, know your notice period precisely:

  • What does your employment contract state?
  • Is it contractual or is there a custom of a longer or shorter period in practice?
  • Are there specific conditions (garden leave, notice payment in lieu)?

This matters because:

  • Job description may specify a start date that is incompatible with your notice period
  • Recruiters always ask — you need a precise answer
  • Employers may offer but be unable to wait for a long notice period

Stating Your Notice Period to Employers

State your notice period clearly and matter-of-factly. "I have a three-month notice period in my current contract" is a fact, not an apology.

If your notice period is long (three months or more) and you are concerned it might put employers off:

  • Many employers will wait for the right candidate
  • Notice periods are often negotiable (your current employer may agree to release you earlier)
  • Some employers will make start dates contingent on agreeing a mutual release with your current employer

Notice Period Negotiation With Current Employer

When you resign, you may have room to negotiate an early release:

  • If your employer has no immediate need for a full handover period, they may agree to a shorter notice
  • If there are business reasons to move you out earlier (restructuring, budget cycle), they may pay you in lieu of part of your notice
  • The negotiation is easier if you have a good relationship with your manager

Tracking Notice Period Status in Your Search

In your job tracker, record your notice period alongside each application. When an interview is confirmed, prepare to discuss start dates. When an offer arrives, the notice period calculation immediately becomes concrete.
