How to Prepare for a New Job After a Successful Search
The offer is accepted. Most candidates at this point mentally move on from the job search before it is fully closed. A few deliberate steps in the period between acceptance and start date set you up for a stronger beginning.
Close Out Your Search Properly
Before moving on, close every open application professionally:
Withdraw active applications: For any application that is still in progress, contact the employer or recruiter and withdraw professionally: "I am writing to let you know that I have accepted another offer and am withdrawing my application for the [Role] position. I appreciate the time you have invested in the process and I hope to cross paths professionally in the future."
This is both courteous and practically important — recruiters remember candidates who ghosted mid-process.
Inform your recruiters: Any recruiter who was actively working on your behalf needs to know you have accepted an offer. They are working for you; leaving them uninformed wastes their effort.
Update your LinkedIn status: When you start the new role, update your LinkedIn profile. Do not update before your start date unless your new employer has confirmed this is appropriate.
Prepare for the New Role
The notice period is an opportunity to prepare:
Research the organisation in depth: Read the annual report, recent news, strategy documents, and any public presentations from leadership. Understanding the organisation's context makes your first weeks more effective.
Connect with your new team before you start: If your new employer encourages it, connecting with future colleagues on LinkedIn or via email before day one builds familiarity that accelerates integration.
Clarify your first-week logistics: Confirm your start date, start time, location or remote setup, who you will meet, and what to bring or prepare.
Define what success looks like in the first ninety days: If you did not discuss this in the interview process, email your new manager in advance asking what they would consider a strong start. This signals initiative and sets clear expectations.
