How to Track Your Job Search Networking Activity
Most job seekers track their formal applications but do not track their networking activity. This is a mistake. Some of the most valuable job search activity happens in conversations, not applications — and without tracking, those conversations are quickly forgotten and rarely followed up effectively.
Why Networking Deserves Its Own Tracking
A conversation with someone in your target field can lead to:
- A referral to an unadvertised role
- An introduction to the right hiring manager
- Intelligence about the company or team before an interview
- A future professional relationship that generates opportunities over years
These outcomes rarely emerge from a single conversation. They require follow-through — and follow-through requires records.
What to Track for Networking
You do not need a separate system for networking. Add a section to your job search tracker or a separate tab:
Contact name and details: Full name, LinkedIn URL, email if you have it, role, and company.
How you connected: Conference, alumni network, referral from X, inbound LinkedIn connection, recruiter.
Date of last contact: When did you last speak or exchange messages?
What was discussed: One to two lines summary of the key points from the conversation — what they told you about the market, their company, their hiring plans, and what you told them.
Next action: Did you promise to send something? Did they offer to introduce you to someone? What needs to happen next, and by when?
Outcome: If a conversation leads to an application, interview, or offer — note it. Over time this data shows you which types of networking generate the most value.
The Follow-Up Is the Critical Step
Most networking conversations fizzle because there is no follow-up. Adding a follow-up date to your tracker creates the prompt:
- Send the article you mentioned within 48 hours
- Connect on LinkedIn after the meeting
- Circle back in three to four weeks if they said they would be hiring soon
- Thank them specifically for the introduction they offered
