How to Use Your Job Search Data to Improve Your Results
After four to six weeks of tracked applications, you have a dataset. That data is one of the most valuable tools in a job search — if you know how to read it.
The Metrics That Matter
Application-to-response rate: What percentage of your applications generate any response (acknowledgement, interview invitation, or rejection)? A response rate below 10% suggests something systematic is wrong — likely CV quality, ATS matching, or targeting.
Response-to-interview conversion: Of the responses you receive, what percentage lead to an interview invitation? A high response-to-interview ratio means your CV is performing well. A low ratio suggests your initial pitch (email, application form introduction) needs work.
Interview-to-next-stage conversion: If you are getting first interviews but rarely progressing, interview performance is the issue rather than your application documents.
Application source distribution: Which platforms or channels are generating your best opportunities? Where is the yield highest?
Time-to-response: How long are employers taking to respond? If consistently over four weeks, you may be applying to employers who are moving slowly or have high volumes — or your applications are arriving too late in the process.
How to Improve Based on Data
Low response rate: Improve CV tailoring (check ATS scores), reconsider your target definition, or try different application sources.
High response rate, low interview rate: Look at what happens between application and interview invitation — is the role different from what the recruiter expects based on your CV?
High interview rate, low progression: Record every interview and the stage at which you were rejected. Patterns in feedback (or lack of it) reveal where you are losing traction.
Strong pipeline, slow timelines: Some employers move slowly. A strong pipeline with slow conversion is less concerning than a thin pipeline at any speed.
