What to Do After an Interview: The Critical 24 Hours

·CVCircuit Team

The interview is over. Most candidates either passively wait for a response or immediately forget what happened. Neither approach is optimal. The 24 hours after an interview are valuable time — for maintaining candidacy, for learning, and for managing your pipeline.

Within One Hour: Capture While It Is Fresh

Before you do anything else, spend 20-30 minutes capturing:

  • Every question you were asked (as specifically as you can remember)
  • Your answers — what you said and how it landed
  • Questions that caught you off guard or that you felt you answered poorly
  • Questions you were asked that you would answer differently now
  • Key things you learned about the role or organisation that you did not know before

This debrief is most valuable immediately — memory of the specifics degrades quickly. Add these notes to your job tracker for this application.

Within 24 Hours: Thank You Note

Send a brief thank-you email to whoever conducted or coordinated the interview. Keep it short:

  • Thank them for their time
  • Reference one specific thing from the conversation that resonated with you
  • Reaffirm your interest in the role

This is not a standard practice universally required in UK hiring, but it is professional, differentiating, and — when done genuinely — well-received. Do not send a generic template. Reference something specific from the conversation that would only make sense coming from you.

Ongoing: Update Your Tracker

Update your application tracker:

  • Change the status to the appropriate post-interview stage
  • Add the date of the interview and any timeline information you received ("they said we would hear within two weeks")
  • Add the post-interview notes from your debrief
  • Set a follow-up date based on the timeline they gave you

Continue Applying

The most important thing to do after an interview is to continue applying. Do not pause your pipeline activity while waiting for a response. The interview may go well or poorly, and the response may come quickly or slowly. Your pipeline should not depend on any single process.
