How to Organise a Graduate Job Search
A graduate job search is often the first structured job search a person runs. The complexity — multiple schemes, different deadlines, varying assessment formats, and often the highest application volumes of any career stage — makes organisation more important here than at almost any other point.
Graduate Scheme Deadlines
Graduate scheme deadlines are firm and typically earlier than candidates expect. Many major employers close applications in November or December for the following autumn intake. Missing a deadline because you did not track it is one of the most avoidable losses in a graduate search.
Your tracker should include application deadlines as a primary field for graduate applications. Set calendar reminders two weeks and one week before each deadline.
The Assessment Centre Calendar
Graduate hiring often involves:
- Online application form
- Psychometric tests (verbal, numerical, situational judgement)
- Video interview (pre-recorded or live)
- Assessment centre (group exercise, case study, presentation, interviews)
Each of these is a stage in the tracker. Each stage at each company needs to be recorded with dates, format, and prep notes.
Managing five to eight graduate processes simultaneously — each at different stages — is the norm, not the exception. Without a tracker, you will confuse what you told which company and miss preparation for assessment days.
The Psychometric Test Bank
Many graduate employers use similar psychometric test formats (SHL, Korn Ferry, Aon, Cut-e). Practising generic versions of these tests is valuable across multiple applications. Note in your tracker which test provider each company uses — this lets you target your practice.
Networking Before Application Deadlines
Many graduate employers run virtual events, insight days, and networking opportunities in the months before applications open. Attending these — and recording your contacts — gives you:
- Genuine content for the "why this company" questions in application forms
- Names of people you can reference
- Early intelligence on what the employer values
These contacts belong in your tracker's networking section.
