How to Conduct a Confidential Job Search

·CVCircuit Team

Most job searches happen while you are still employed. Managing a confidential search — one where your current employer does not know you are looking — requires a specific set of habits, particularly in an era of LinkedIn and social media visibility.

LinkedIn Visibility Settings

LinkedIn is the most significant confidentiality risk in a modern job search. By default, your connections may see activity notifications when you update your profile significantly. Before starting an active search:

Disable "notify your network" when editing your profile: In LinkedIn settings, turn off notifications to connections when you update your profile. This prevents your current colleagues seeing your CV update.

Turn on "Open to Work" for recruiters only (not publicly): LinkedIn allows you to signal that you are open to opportunities in a way that is only visible to recruiters (who are paying LinkedIn subscribers), not to your connections. This is not completely private — a determined current employer with a LinkedIn recruiter account could potentially see it — but it is significantly more discreet than the green "Open to Work" frame visible to all connections.

Be careful about LinkedIn profile completeness updates: A sudden flurry of profile updates is visible and can raise questions.

References and Discretion

Do not list your current manager as a reference — they are the person you are most concerned about confidentiality with. Use previous managers, clients, or senior peers who are not in your current organisation.

When you are in late-stage processes and an employer wants a reference from a current employer, you can ask them to delay that reference until after an offer is accepted, when you will give notice anyway.

Timing Interviews

Schedule interviews at times that do not require covering for absence — before work, during lunch, after hours, or on days you have legitimate out-of-office time. Avoid taking too many "dentist appointments" in a short period.

Confidentiality With Recruiters

When briefing recruiters, make your confidentiality requirements explicit from the first conversation. Most professional recruiters respect this — they will not approach your current employer without your permission.
