Why 1 in 5 Jobs You Apply to Might Not Actually Exist

·CVCircuit

Silence after an application feels personal. It usually isn't — and sometimes it isn't even about you, your CV, or the recruiter at all. Sometimes the job was never real to begin with.

The scale of the problem

A 2025 study from Greenhouse Software found that at least 1 in 5 US job postings is fake or was never actually filled. Source Separate research from ResumeUp.AI found that 27.4% of US job listings on LinkedIn are likely "ghost jobs." Source

Ghost jobs get posted for reasons that have nothing to do with an active hiring need: keeping a pipeline of resumes on file for future openings, projecting growth to investors or the market, satisfying an internal policy that a role be posted externally even when an internal candidate is already picked, or simply forgetting to take an old listing down.

Why this compounds the silence problem

Layer this on top of ordinary competition and the numbers get bleak fast. A typical corporate opening receives around 250 applications. Source If a meaningful share of the postings you're applying to were never going to result in a hire at all, no amount of tailoring or follow-up will ever produce a reply, because there's no active decision being made on the other end.

How to tell the difference, roughly

There's no perfect way to spot a ghost job from the outside, but a few patterns raise the odds:

  • The listing has been up for many weeks or months with no changes
  • The same role gets reposted repeatedly, sometimes under a different title
  • The job description is unusually vague about the team, manager, or day-to-day work
  • The company has dozens of open roles relative to its visible size or growth

None of these are proof on their own. But a posting with several of these signs is a reasonable one to deprioritize in favor of listings that look freshly active.

What this changes about how you should apply

The practical takeaway isn't to stop applying — it's to stop reading every silence as a verdict on your resume. Given that a real share of postings were never fillable in the first place, the only real defense is applying to enough genuinely active listings, tailored well, that the ghost jobs mixed in among them don't sink your overall odds.
