UK Youth Unemployment Just Hit 16.4%. Why Isn't Anyone Talking About It?

·CVCircuit

The headline unemployment rate in the UK gets a lot of attention. The youth figure buried inside the same release tends not to.

In the April to June 2026 quarter, the unemployment rate for 16 to 24 year olds reached 16.4%, up from 14.3% a year earlier — an increase of more than two full percentage points in twelve months. In absolute terms, 751,000 young people were unemployed, 109,000 more than the year before. Employment among the same age group fell too: the youth employment rate dropped to 50.7% from 51.9%, with 3.82 million 16-to-24-year-olds in work, 36,000 fewer than a year prior. On top of that, 981,000 young people — 13.0% of all 16-to-24-year-olds — were classed as NEET (not in education, employment or training) in the same quarter (figures via ONS Labour Force Survey data reported by aiproofcareers.co.uk, sourced from the ONS NEET bulletin).

Graduates specifically are applying far harder than they used to for the same or worse outcomes. 57% of 2024 graduates sent 30 or more applications before finding work, compared to just 31% of the 2022 cohort — nearly double in two years. 84% of 2025 graduates rated their job search "difficult", with 43% calling it "very difficult", up from 61% and 22% respectively just two years earlier (The Interview Guys' 2025 state-of-job-search research).

Put plainly: it now takes meaningfully more applications to get the same result a graduate two years ago got with far fewer, in a market where nearly a million young people aren't working, studying, or training at all.

What this means practically

If you're a graduate or early-career candidate, the honest takeaway from this data isn't "try harder" — it's "the volume required has structurally increased, and it isn't your fault." What you can control is how efficiently you sustain that higher volume without every application becoming a generic, unedited copy of the last one.
