918,000 Over-50s Can't Get Hired Right Now. The Reason Isn't Skills

·CVCircuit

918,000 people aged 50 to state pension age were struggling to find work in the UK at the end of 2025 — up 22% in just two years, and the highest figure since 2020, according to reporting covered by People Management.

That's not a skills gap. Separate research from Hays found 81% of older workers believe their chances of securing a role have been lowered specifically because of their age, and a survey covered by Staffing Industry Analysts found more than a third (36%) of 50-to-69-year-olds believe they're disadvantaged in job applications purely because of how old they are — see the Hays press release and Staffing Industry Analysts' coverage.

The knock-on effects show up in behaviour, not just sentiment:

  • 22% of over-50s have removed their age from their CV entirely, and around half of those did it specifically to avoid being stereotyped
  • 26% say they've been presumed to struggle with new technology
  • 31% felt workplace culture favoured younger applicants
  • 15% say they've been rejected from a job explicitly because of their age

One widely shared case put a number on the grind this creates: a 59-year-old UK jobseeker reported sending 598 applications to land just 8 interviews — a conversion rate far below what younger applicants typically face (as reported by the Cool Down).

What actually helps

Stripping your age off a CV only goes so far when dates of employment and graduation years do the same job implicitly. What tends to move the needle more is making sure every application is framed around current, relevant skills and recent achievements rather than a chronological list stretching back decades — and doing that consistently across a high volume of applications, because the data above makes clear that over-50s need more applications per interview than the already-brutal average, not fewer.

That's a lot of manual rewriting and retyping to sustain over months. The CVCircuit Job Search Copilot — free to try, with 5 free downloads and 5 free Pro actions included — tailors your CV to each listing's actual requirements and fills in the rest of the application — work history, certifications, screening questions — from your saved profile, using only real information you've provided, so keeping volume up doesn't mean burning out on admin. You still review and submit every application yourself; the extension just removes the retyping.
