CV vs Cover Letter — What Each Document Does and Why Both Matter

Two documents, two jobs

A CV and a cover letter are not the same thing written twice. They do different work in your application and are read in different ways by different people at different stages.

Understanding the distinction helps you write both better.

What a CV is

A CV is a factual record of your professional life. It documents:

  • What roles you've held, where, and for how long
  • What you achieved in those roles
  • What qualifications you have
  • What skills and tools you bring

It answers the question: "Are you qualified to do this job?"

A CV is designed to be scanned quickly, compared against other CVs, and processed by ATS software. It's structured, consistent, and factual. It's not conversational. It doesn't explain your motivations or tell your story.

What a cover letter is

A cover letter is a persuasive argument for why this employer should hire you specifically. It explains:

  • Why you want this role (not just any role — this one)
  • Why you want this employer (what you know about them that makes them your choice)
  • What makes you a strong fit beyond your credentials
  • Anything that your CV doesn't convey on its own (career change, gap, unusual combination of skills)

It answers the question: "Why should we interview you over someone equally qualified?"

A cover letter is read by a human. It's your voice. It can be persuasive, specific, and show personality — within professional limits.

How they're read differently

CV: Scanned in 6–10 seconds initially. ATS processes it first. If it passes, a recruiter scans for: relevant job title, relevant employer, relevant duration, relevant skills. If all four pass the initial scan, they read more carefully.

Cover letter: Read after the CV (if it's read at all at the initial screen). But for roles where the cover letter is requested, many employers use it as a significant filter. A strong cover letter can lift a borderline CV into the shortlist. A weak or generic cover letter can sink a strong CV.

The common mistakes

Repeating the CV in the cover letter: "As you can see from my CV, I have 7 years of experience in..." The recruiter can see your CV. Don't repeat it. Expand on it.

Treating the cover letter as optional: When a cover letter is requested, not submitting one — or submitting a clearly generic one — signals you're not genuinely interested in the role.

Writing a generic cover letter: "I am writing to express my interest in the position advertised on your website." This is immediately identifiable as a template. Recruiters have seen it thousands of times. It says nothing.

Writing a cover letter that's just a list of your experience: A cover letter should be a persuasive argument, not a summary of your CV sections.

What works in each document

In your CV:

  • Achievement-led bullet points
  • Specific numbers and outcomes
  • ATS-optimised keywords
  • Clear, consistent formatting

In your cover letter:

  • Genuine explanation of why this company
  • Specific reference to something about the role or company that attracted you
  • Concise explanation of why you're a strong fit (not repetition of CV facts, but synthesis of why they matter)
  • One or two concrete examples that bring your CV claims to life
  • Brief explanation of anything that needs context (career change, gap, unusual background)

The right length

CV: 1–2 pages for most candidates. 2 pages is standard.

Cover letter: 3–4 short paragraphs. No more than one page. Recruiters don't read essay-length cover letters.

When cover letters matter most

  • Graduate applications: cover letters are heavily weighted
  • Roles requiring strong communication skills: your cover letter is a writing sample
  • Career changes: the cover letter explains what your CV cannot
  • Competitive roles: a strong cover letter can differentiate you from equally qualified candidates
