Cover Letter Word Count: How Many Words Is Ideal?
Word count is a proxy for the real question: how long should a cover letter be? Here is the practical answer.
The Target Range
For most professional applications, a cover letter of 200 to 400 words is ideal. This translates to three to four short paragraphs on one page — enough to make a substantive case without wasting the reader's time.
At 200 words, you have room for an opening (two sentences), a core paragraph (three to four sentences), and a brief close (one to two sentences). This is often sufficient for a well-targeted application.
At 400 words, you have room for a fourth paragraph — perhaps to address career context, a specific qualification, or additional relevant experience.
Beyond 400 words: you are likely including content that could be cut. Review for repetition, overly long sentences, and anything that does not directly support your candidacy for this specific role.
When You Need More Words
Some situations genuinely require more space:
- Career changers explaining a transition
- Senior executives with substantial experience to reference
- Candidates with a gap to address
- Roles that explicitly ask for a more detailed letter of application (some academic, legal, or public sector roles)
In these cases, pushing to 500 words is acceptable. Beyond 600 words, you are testing the reader's patience.
When Fewer Words Is Better
For contract applications, entry-level roles, or applications where you have limited unique content to add — a shorter letter (150 to 250 words) that is tight and specific outperforms a longer letter padded to hit a perceived minimum.
The goal is not to hit a word count. The goal is to make a compelling case in as few words as possible.
Common Word Count Padding to Cut
- Phrases that restate the obvious ("I am applying for this role because...")
- Sentences that describe your CV rather than adding to it
- Lengthy closing sentences ("I am available to discuss this at a time that is convenient for you at any point in the coming weeks")
- Filler openers ("I was delighted to come across this opportunity and felt compelled to apply")
