How to Write a Cover Letter When You Have Applied to This Company Before
Reapplying to a company that previously rejected you is more common than you might think — and it is entirely acceptable if you are a genuinely stronger candidate the second time. The cover letter for a second application requires some specific decisions.
Should You Acknowledge the Previous Application?
This depends on:
- How long ago the previous application was
- Whether you have the same or a different contact at the company
- Whether you genuinely have new experience or qualifications to offer
If less than a year has passed and the same hiring team is likely to see your application: yes, acknowledge it. Being transparent signals confidence and honesty, and the alternative — pretending you have never applied — may be less effective if your application is flagged in their ATS or by the recruiter's memory.
If more than a year has passed and the team has likely changed: you can exercise judgment on whether to mention it. A fresh application without acknowledging the history is not dishonest at this distance.
How to Acknowledge It Well
"I applied for a similar role at [Company] last year and was not progressed. Since then I have [gained specific experience, completed qualification, delivered specific project] which I believe significantly strengthens my candidacy for this role."
This is confident, honest, and forward-looking. It frames the previous rejection as part of a development journey rather than as a weakness.
What Needs to Have Changed
A second application without material improvement in your candidacy is unlikely to lead to a different result. Before reapplying, honestly assess:
- Have you gained directly relevant experience?
- Have you completed a qualification they required?
- Is this a different role with a better fit to your current profile?
- Has enough time passed that your candidacy might be evaluated fresh?
If nothing has changed, consider waiting until something has.
The Rest of the Cover Letter
Beyond the acknowledgment, the second-application cover letter follows the same structure as any other. Make the case for your candidacy based on your current profile. Do not over-explain the previous rejection.
