How to Write a Cover Letter for a Part-Time Job

·CVCircuit Team

Part-time job applications span an enormous range — from junior retail or hospitality roles to senior professional roles offered on a part-time or flexible basis. The cover letter approach differs depending on where your application falls on that spectrum.

When to Explain Your Part-Time Preference

For professional and career-level roles advertised as part-time: you do not necessarily need to explain why you want part-time work. The employer has already advertised the role with that structure. Focus your cover letter on your qualifications and what you bring.

For roles where you are requesting part-time arrangements not specified in the advert: mention your preference briefly and positively. "I am applying for this role on a part-time basis (three days per week) and would welcome the opportunity to discuss whether flexible working arrangements might be possible." Do not make this the focus of the letter — state it clearly and move on.

For roles where part-time is the obvious norm (term-time, seasonal, hospitality, retail): cover letters may be shorter and more direct. Employers for these roles often value reliability and enthusiasm over elaborate applications.

Professional Part-Time Applications

If you are a senior professional seeking a part-time arrangement — perhaps returning from parental leave, managing health requirements, or combining multiple professional activities — your cover letter should:

  • Lead with your professional credentials and the value you bring
  • Briefly state your availability and working pattern
  • If relevant, explain the context in one sentence (without over-explaining or apologising)
  • Make the case that your experience justifies the arrangement

Many professional roles can be done effectively at four days or three days per week. If you can make that case briefly and confidently, do so.

For Portfolio or Interim Workers

If you maintain multiple part-time roles simultaneously (a portfolio career), note this in your cover letter as a positive: the breadth of perspective and network it provides. Some employers specifically value candidates who operate this way.

For Junior or Entry-Level Part-Time Roles

Keep it brief. State your availability clearly (specific days if relevant), express genuine interest in the employer, and demonstrate any relevant experience or enthusiasm for the work.
