How to Start a Cover Letter: Opening Lines That Work

·CVCircuit Team

The opening line of a cover letter is your one opportunity to earn the next thirty seconds of the recruiter's attention. Most candidates waste it with a line so generic it has become invisible to anyone who reads CVs professionally.

The Lines That Kill Your Application Immediately

"I am writing to apply for the position of [role] as advertised on [job board]."

This tells the recruiter what they already know. The application form already said you were applying for this role. The job board already said where it was posted. This opening line contains zero useful information and signals that you have not thought about what you actually want to say.

Other red flags: "I am a motivated and results-driven professional," "I have always been passionate about [sector]," "I believe I would be an excellent fit for your company."

These phrases appear in thousands of cover letters. They do not differentiate you.

Opening Lines That Actually Work

The best opening lines do one of the following:

Lead with a specific reason for this organisation: "I have been following [Company's] approach to [specific initiative or product] for the past year — the [specific project/decision] is exactly the kind of [challenge/approach] I have been looking for at this point in my career."

Open with relevant context or achievement: "In five years leading [function] teams, the clearest pattern I have seen is [relevant insight] — and the [role] at [Company] is the opportunity to put that into practice at scale."

Reference a specific signal of interest: "When [Company] announced [initiative/news], it confirmed my interest in the role — [brief connection to your background]."

Be direct about your candidacy: "I am applying for the [Role] because my [specific experience] maps directly to what you have outlined — [one-line summary of the most relevant qualification]."

The Test

Read your opening line and ask: could this appear in anyone else's cover letter? If yes, rewrite it. The opening line should be specific to you, this role, and this employer.
