The Honest Answer
It depends on the context. The cover letter's importance varies significantly by:
- Employer size and hiring volume
- Seniority of the role
- Whether the employer has explicitly requested one
- Whether the role involves significant written communication
When Cover Letters Are Read
Smaller employers and direct applications: At smaller organisations without high-volume recruitment infrastructure, cover letters are much more likely to be read and valued. The hiring manager — often the person you would work for — reads every application carefully.
Senior and specialist roles: For senior, technical, or specialist roles where candidate pool is smaller, every element of the application gets more attention. A strong cover letter can genuinely differentiate you.
When the employer asks for one: If the job description says "please include a cover letter," take it seriously. An employer who asks for one will likely read it.
Roles requiring written communication: For roles in communications, PR, marketing, content, law, or consulting — where writing is a core skill — the cover letter is partly an assessment of your writing. A strong one significantly supports your candidacy.
When Cover Letters May Be Skimmed or Skipped
High-volume graduate recruitment at large companies: Applications processed through ATS at scale may see cover letters only at later stages of the process. Recruiters shortlisting from 500 applications focus on the CV first.
Easy Apply on LinkedIn: Many Easy Apply applications do not have a cover letter component at all.
The Safe Approach
If a cover letter is optional, write one for roles where you want to stand out, where you have something specific to say, or where your CV alone does not tell the full story. Skip it for high-volume applications to large employers where your energy is better spent tailoring your CV.
