How to Write a Cover Letter for a Contract or Freelance Role
Contract roles move faster than permanent ones. Hiring decisions are often made in days rather than weeks, and the cover letter — if required at all — needs to be direct and immediately focused on capability and availability.
When a Cover Letter Is Required for Contract Roles
Many contract applications, particularly through recruiters, do not involve a formal cover letter. The recruiter often does the initial matching and presentation. But for direct contract applications, or when a hiring organisation requests a cover letter alongside the CV, the following applies.
What Contract Cover Letters Should Do
The hiring manager for a contract role has one primary question: can this person deliver what we need, starting soon?
Your cover letter should answer:
- Yes, I have done this before — specifically
- Yes, I am available to start — be explicit about your availability
- Yes, I am already a credible contractor — signal professionalism
Keep It Short and Direct
Contract cover letters can be shorter than permanent application cover letters. Three short paragraphs is typically sufficient:
Paragraph 1: What you do and your immediate availability. "I am an experienced [role type] with a track record in [specific area]. I am currently available and can start within [timeframe]."
Paragraph 2: Your most relevant experience for this specific engagement. Two to three sentences about previous contracts or roles that closely match what is being asked for. Specific deliverables and outcomes preferred over general responsibilities.
Paragraph 3: Why this engagement specifically interests you (brief) and a direct close.
Availability and Rate
Your cover letter itself does not typically include your rate — that is usually communicated to the recruiter or in a separate conversation. But your availability should be explicit.
For Freelance Pitches
For project-based freelance work, the cover letter can function similarly to a short proposal. Address the specific brief, explain your approach, reference relevant previous work, and confirm your capacity and timeline.
