How to End a Cover Letter: Closing Lines That Leave a Good Impression

·CVCircuit Team

The closing paragraph of a cover letter is often an afterthought. Candidates who have spent care on the opening and middle frequently end with something limp and generic. A strong close leaves the recruiter with a clear call to action and a sense of momentum.

Closes That Fail

"I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience."

This is passive, slightly presumptuous, and completely generic. It adds nothing. The recruiter knows they will be in touch if they are interested — you have not added any value with this sentence.

"Thank you for considering my application."

Polite, but again generic. Every candidate could end with this. You do not want to end your cover letter in a way that is indistinguishable from the candidate before and after you in the pile.

"I am available for interview at your convenience."

Also fine, but puts the candidate in a slightly supplicant position and adds nothing.

Closes That Work Better

Express specific interest in discussing: "I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my experience in [relevant area] could contribute to [specific aspect of the role or team]."

Name your availability with a forward lean: "I am available for a conversation at any time and look forward to the opportunity to discuss the role in more detail."

Reference something specific about next steps: "I would be delighted to discuss the role further — please feel free to contact me at [email/phone] at any time."

For senior applications, a slightly more direct close: "I am confident that my experience translates directly to what you are looking for. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss it with you."

The Sign-Off

"Kind regards," or "Best regards," followed by your name. "Yours sincerely" is technically correct for a formal letter when you know the recipient's name; "Yours faithfully" is for when you do not. In practice, "Kind regards" works in all professional contexts and avoids the formal/informal distinction.

Avoid "Warmly," "Cheers," or anything casual.
