Why You Are Getting No Response to Your Job Applications
Sending application after application and hearing nothing back is one of the most demoralising experiences in a job search. Before you conclude that you are simply not good enough, consider whether a fixable problem is causing the silence.
Reason 1: ATS Is Filtering You Out
The most common fixable cause of no response is poor ATS keyword matching. If your CV scores below 60% against the job description, it may never reach a human recruiter at larger employers.
Fix: Run your CV through an ATS checker against the specific job descriptions you are applying to. If your scores are consistently below 65%, your tailoring is the problem. Update your skills section and personal statement to include the relevant keywords for each application.
Reason 2: Your CV Is Not Tailored
Sending the same generic CV to every job is a low-probability strategy. Recruiters can tell within seconds whether a CV is tailored to their role or is a generic submission.
Fix: Tailor your CV's personal statement, skills section, and top experience bullets for each application. It takes fifteen minutes and significantly improves both ATS scores and human response rates.
Reason 3: Your CV Has Formatting Issues
Badly formatted CVs — two columns, tables, complex designs — may parse incorrectly in ATS, causing your experience and skills to appear garbled or missing.
Fix: Simplify your formatting. Switch to a single-column layout, remove tables, move any content from headers or footers into the main body.
Reason 4: You Are Applying to the Wrong Roles
If you are genuinely not meeting the requirements for the roles you are applying to, no amount of optimisation will change the outcome. Honestly assess whether your experience and qualifications match the roles you are targeting.
Fix: Apply to roles where you meet at least 70% of the stated requirements. Consider whether you need to target a lower seniority level or build missing skills before moving up.
Reason 5: High Competition
Some roles and sectors are simply very competitive. A strong application may still not result in a response if 500 equally strong candidates applied first.
Fix: Apply earlier in the posting cycle. Broaden your search to include less-competitive roles or employers. Use your network for referrals — referred candidates typically bypass ATS filtering and go directly to human review.
Reason 6: Your Contact Details Are Wrong or Missing
This sounds basic, but it happens. If your email address or phone number is in a header, footer, or image that did not parse correctly, the recruiter may want to contact you and be unable to.
Fix: Check your contact details are in the main body of your CV, clearly formatted, and correct.
