LinkedIn Profiles and ATS: How They Work Together

·CVCircuit Team

LinkedIn and traditional ATS are separate systems, but they are increasingly connected in the modern hiring process. Many applications originate from LinkedIn, and recruiter searches on LinkedIn use keyword matching that closely parallels ATS. Optimising both — and understanding how they interact — gives you a significant advantage.

LinkedIn's Own Keyword Matching

When a recruiter searches LinkedIn for candidates, LinkedIn's search algorithm matches against your profile — your headline, summary, experience section, and skills. This is functionally similar to ATS keyword matching.

If your LinkedIn profile uses different terminology from your CV, or omits skills that your CV includes, you may be invisible to recruiters searching for those skills.

LinkedIn Easy Apply

When you use LinkedIn Easy Apply, your application typically includes your LinkedIn profile data plus any uploaded CV. The recruiter sees both. Some employers' ATS integrations pull your LinkedIn profile directly; others rely on your uploaded CV.

For Easy Apply applications:

  • Your uploaded CV should be tailored to the specific role
  • Your LinkedIn profile should be keyword-optimised for your target role types more broadly

When ATS and LinkedIn Interact

Many ATS platforms now integrate with LinkedIn, allowing candidates to apply with their LinkedIn profile or enabling recruiters to view LinkedIn profiles alongside ATS applications. This means your LinkedIn profile may be visible to the recruiter even if you applied through a separate ATS portal.

Consistency between your CV and LinkedIn profile is important — significant discrepancies in dates, job titles, or employers can raise questions.

LinkedIn-Specific Keyword Optimisation

LinkedIn's algorithm indexes your:

  • Headline (highest weight)
  • About/Summary section
  • Experience job titles and descriptions
  • Skills section (and endorsements)
  • Education section

Update your headline to include your target job title and key skill. Ensure your summary contains the terminology you want to be found for. Add relevant skills and ask for endorsements in the key areas.

The Unified Profile Strategy

Rather than treating your CV and LinkedIn as separate documents, think of them as a unified professional presence. Your CV is tailored for specific applications. Your LinkedIn profile is optimised for your target role and sector more broadly — so recruiter searches surface you and your profile reinforces the impression your CV creates.
