How Job Boards Use ATS: Indeed, LinkedIn, Reed and More
Most people think of ATS as software the employer runs on their own system. But job boards — where most applications actually originate — have their own screening and matching algorithms that function similarly to ATS. Understanding how major job boards work helps you optimise your profile and applications accordingly.
Indeed
Indeed has its own candidate matching system that scores how well your profile and CV match job postings. When you apply on Indeed, your application is often scored and the employer may see a "Indeed Score" or a ranking of applicants.
For Indeed:
- Keep your Indeed profile fully completed and up to date
- Your uploaded CV should be keyword-matched to the roles you are targeting
- Indeed also uses your search and application history to surface relevant roles — applying to well-matched roles improves your recommendations
LinkedIn's job application feature uses your profile data as the application, alongside any uploaded CV. LinkedIn has its own "Easy Apply" applicant ranking that surfaces candidates to employers based on profile match to the job description.
For LinkedIn:
- Your LinkedIn profile headline, summary, and skills sections are all scanned
- Keyword-matching your LinkedIn profile to your target role types improves both recruiter visibility and Easy Apply ranking
- Skills endorsements are indexed by LinkedIn's matching algorithm
Reed and Totaljobs (UK)
Reed and Totaljobs are major UK job boards with their own candidate matching systems. Employers on these platforms can set screening criteria that filter applications before they see them.
Reed in particular has a strong profile-based search that employers use to find candidates proactively. Keeping your Reed profile current and keyword-rich can result in inbound recruitment approaches.
Directly Employer-Hosted Applications
When you apply via the employer's own website, your application goes into their ATS (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo, etc.) rather than through a job board. In this case, your CV is processed directly — so ATS best practices apply in full.
The Unified Lesson
Regardless of which channel you apply through, keyword matching is fundamental. Whether it is Indeed's matching score, LinkedIn's Easy Apply ranking, or an employer's ATS, a CV and profile that reflect the language of your target roles will outperform a generic one.
