How to make an ATS-friendly CV (without looking generic)

An ATS-friendly CV is simply a CV that can be parsed cleanly and still reads naturally for a recruiter. The goal is clarity: simple structure, consistent headings, and language that matches the role.

1) Use a simple structure

Keep your CV in a standard, single-column layout. Avoid text boxes, tables, and complex columns. Use clear section headings like Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills.

2) Mirror the job description (responsibly)

The best way to improve relevance is to reuse the employer’s terminology where it’s accurate. If the job description says “stakeholder management” and you’ve done it, use that phrase.

3) Make dates and titles consistent

Use one date format throughout (e.g. Jan 2022 – Mar 2024), and keep job titles and company names on their own lines. Consistency helps both parsing and scanning.

4) Keep formatting minimal

Bold headings are fine. Avoid icons, decorative lines, and heavy spacing tricks. Use bullets for achievements and keep each bullet focused on impact.
